Court of Honor

This is the Court of Honor right after summer camp, so there were tons of merit badges to present tonight.

Calvin earned his Mammal Study, Archery, Environmentalist (earned at a merit badge college), Emergency Preparedness, and Rifle Shooting. Whew. That's a lot. He has one more requirement to meet for Reptile Study.

They also presented the boys who went to camp with special achievement awards.

Calvin earned Bieber Award (I'll let him tell that story).

Joshua earned "Smile King" for being so smiley and good-natured even when the temperature was above 100deg and humidity was around 90%.

Joshua was also presented his Scout Rank tonight.

Scott Pyle was in charge of Leader Recognition Awards. He does a great job with this every year and always brings lots of laughs.

For our Wolf Den Leader: A trip for he and his wife to "The Ritz" (Ritz Crackers).

Our Webelos I Den Leader is such a SWEETie handling all of the TARTS in her den.

We gave our other Webelos I Den Leader a bonus of "100 Grand."

Our Cubmaster is new to the pack. So he got his very first "Payday".

Our gift to our Webelos II Den Leader is usually a bit more serious. He's leaving our pack and that makes us sad. He was presented with a framed picture so he would never forget us.

This year we held our first ever cake auction at our Blue and Gold banquet. The boys donated cakes they decorated to sell to the highest bidder. It was a huge success and such a riot! There were some crazy bidding wars and one cake went for $50!

We will definitely be doing this again next year.

401 Thanksgiving Feast

Pack 401 and Troop 401 meet together once a year for a Thanksgiving Feast at Isley Farm (dubbed Camp Isley). The Isleys are our Charter Reps.

The Armanis came early and started cooking a "Trashcan Turkey."

Essentially the trashcan creates works like a convention oven.

When Calvin and the other scouts came in from their nature hike, Calvin went and sat with his sister.

We have some very talented and creative parents.

We ended the evening with a campfire and flag retirement.

Webelos Boy Scout Camping Trip

Once a year Troop 401 hosts a camping trip for the Webelos IIs of Pack 401. This meets a requirement for the Arrow of Light and prepares them for bridging over into Boy Scouts.

Jeremiah got to tag along. It was a very special treat for him.

Calvin helped teach the younger boys how the Boy Scouts earn their Firem'n Chit and Totem Chip cards. These cards give a scout the right to carry a knife and make fire.

Joshua and Calvin will share many special scout experiences as Joshua bridges over.

Council Camporee - Back to our Heritage 1910

Our pack's display. We had to choose a state to research and display information from 1910. We chose Hawaii. Hawaii had a Boy Scout Troop in 1910. They were Troop 1 and are still active today. The first group of boys called themselves the "Rainbow Patrol". You can read more about them here.

Here you can see the tags (or "Passports"). The council included the siblings at this camporee and had plenty to go around. The children presented them at each activity station to get a sticker.

There were so many activities to do. Here we are touring the inside of an Ambulance.

Here is a peak at the new (and improved)Pack 401 t-shirts.

We wear these as our "Class B Uniform". It's not an official BSA term, but it's the best way to define their purpose. The boys wear these to outdoor events that don't require an official uniform. Sometimes, den leaders will plan a messy activity for the boys, and ask that the boys wear their "Class B" t-shirts to den meetings so they don't ruin their uniforms.

We set up at the local school to hand out fliers and talk to people about Cub Scouts.

We had a craft at our table. The kids that passed-by made cute little cars out of candy. We tied it together with our Pine Wood Derby and showed the boys our cars and trophies.

I think we were pretty successful. Several parents stopped by to ask us about scouts and what we do. I also received quite a few phone calls.

Roller Skating Beltloop

We decided to complete the Roller Skating Belt Loop and Pin as a Pack at one of our "Summer Time" events.

Belt Loop

Complete these three requirements:

1. Explain ways to protect yourself while roller skating or in-line skating, and the need for proper safety equipment.

2. Spend at least 30 minutes practicing the skills of roller skating or in-line skating.

3. Go skating with a family member or den for at least three hours. Chart your time.

Sports Pin

Earn the Roller Skating belt loop, and complete five of the following requirements:

1. Participate in a pack or community skating event.

2. Demonstrate how to disassemble and reassemble skates.
3. Explain the proper clothing for roller or in-line skating.

4. Spend at least 15 minutes, on two occasions, practicing warm up exercises before skating.
5. Play a game of roller hockey,
6. Learn and demonstrate two new roller skating skills: forward scissors, forward stroking, crossover, or squat skate.
7. Participate in a roller or inl-ine skating skill development clinic.

8. Demonstrate how to stop quickly and safely.

9. Demonstrate how to skate backward. Skate backward for five feet.

10. Play a game on roller skates, roller blades, or in-line skates.

The skating rink we went to was SUPER friendly. We explained what we were trying to accomplish and they were happy to help us out. They took the boys to the back to give a tour.

The employees were so funny (totally cracked-me-up). They even took it a step further and let the boys practice "working" working there by retrieving the right size skates for customers.

Then they showed the boys what a skate looks like when it needs to be repaired.

Then EACH boy got a turn taking the skates apart and putting them back together again.

The rest of our time was spent having fun. This was a great belt loop to work on together!

BSA Simulcast Event

This year BSA is celebrating 100 Years of Scouting. National Jamboree has been going on. They simulcasted the big show with 6 cities across the country. Durham, NC happened to be one of them. So we went to the Durham Bulls Stadium, even in the rain.

They had games for the kids.

Live entertainment.

And who can pass up nachos at the concession stand?

They started simulcasting around 7:45pm.

Calvin made it on screen.

They ended with a candlelight ceremony.

Durham Bulls Scout Night

Twice a year the Durham Bulls host a Scout Night. After the game, scouts stay the night in a tent on the outfield. They watch a movie on the big screen until lights out. Then in the morning they have breakfast with the players.

This trip the boys worked on their Totin' Chip Card that gives them the right to carry a pocket knife to scouting events. They also continued work on their Fishing Merit Badge, Cooking Merit Badge, and rank advancement.

Butner Chicken Pickin'

We booked a booth at the Butner Chicken Pickin' (a yearly community event).

The boys sold water to the thirsty crowd.

It was a hot day, but we met so many new people. We hope to gain new families from this event.

Camp Campbell

Calvin's first ever camping trip as a Boy Scout.
He worked all day on his Fishing Merit Badge.

He's completed many of the requirements. He still needs to catch 2 fish, identify 3, and clean/cook a fish he caught.

Cause the fish just won't bitin' that day.

...He'll get it done.

Leon chaperoned the event, and Lamont came out and spent the day with him on Saturday. Lucky kid had both his dads on this trip!

The Warrior Patrol worked on their Cooking Merit Badge together.

The boys are getting ready to make what's called a hobo. Basically you take your meat (chicken, beef, pork, whatever), veggies, and spices and wrap them up in aluminum foil. Then you cook them in your fire for about 45 minutes.

These are actually very very tasty.

These boys have a great time. They bond over these type of trips becoming very close friends.

Cub Scout Family Campout

Camping is unanimously our favorite part of scouting. This campout is different from a council or district camporee. This is just our pack and it's completely parent/den leader run. We tailor all of the activities to the needs of the scout majority. In the spring there aren't usually an requirements needed towards rank, so we work together on various achievements.

This weekend we are working on the Fishing and Weather beltloops and pins, the kickball beltloop, along with the Outdoor Activity Award and Leave No Trace Award.

Friday night is spent setting up tents, our camp kitchen, and ends with time around the campfire. We usually set a time of 10:00pm quiet time, but we usually end up staying up really late enjoying ourselves.

Some things on our schedule are set in stone. Like flag raising. We do that every morning at camp. Then there's breakfast and clean up.

Here the boys are working on some of the written requirements for the Fishing Pin.

Both Jeremiah and Joshua caught their first fish ever.

Jeremiah even learned how to grab a fish by the bottom lip to release him. We have some great leaders who really take their time teaching the boys.

After fishing the boys settled in for lunch and some play time. Then we got them busy working on their Weather Beltloops and Pins. They defined some terms, made weather vanes and rain gages, and also started their charts to track the weather for one week.

After "so much school work" we took the boys out to the field to earn their Kickball Beltloops. They ended up playing for over an hour. They had a BLAST!

They also went on a 30 minute hike just before dinner to work towards their 100 Years of Scouting Ribbons.

After a dinner of hot dogs and hamburgers the boys settled around the campfire to perform skits and sing songs.

They also worked together to respectfully retire an American Flag.

Finally the moment came that they've been waiting all weekend for. S'MORES!!

Some decided the campfire was too hot (marshmallows melted right off their sticks)and they used the hot coals left over from dinner instead.

Kelsea is our Pack Story Teller. When we don't have the boys busy with a task or game, you can find several gathered around her listening to one of her many great stories. These scouts swarmed around her at 7:00 am when they were waiting for breakfast.

Once breakfast is over and Tent City has been broken down we gather around the fire pit for our Sunday Service. This usually includes a moment of prayer and a story with a good moral lesson.

The very last thing we do with our boys is to instill our Leave No Trace policy. We line up side by side on one end of camp and march in line through to the other, looking for trash or any other debris that may have fallen on the ground. We also rake over our tent beds to make sure we truly leave behind nothing but our footprints.

Boy Scout Court of Honor

Calvin earned his Scout badge. This signifies that the boys have met all the joining requirements and that they are ready to start working their way up in rank:

Calvin is finding that Boy Scouts is 10 times harder than Cubs. He is loving the new challenges.

The boys keep a board that shows where all the scouts rank. As they move up, they move their little emblem up the pegs.

We are so proud of all his hard work.

Blue and Gold - Bridging Over

When a Cub Scout bridges over into Boy Scouts it's a pretty big deal.

First the Webelos Den Leader and the Cubmaster take off the boys' Cub Scout epaulets, neckerchief, and slide.

Then the Scoutmaster calls for each boy from the other side of the bridge. Two Boy Scouts greet him and put on his Boy Scout epaulets, neckerchief, and slide.

Then once all the new scouts have crossed over, the whole troop walks by welcoming the boys in.

And they are officially Boy Scouts.

Blue and Gold - Arrow of Light Ceremony

The Arrow of Light award is the highest award available to Cub Scouts. It requires the Scout to have earned the Webelos Scout badge and eight activity badges. In addition to the skill and activity requirements of the preceding ranks, the Arrow of Light requires Scouts to learn the Scout Promise and Scout Law, and visit one meeting and one activity of a Boy Scout troop, in preparation for advancing to the Boy Scouts. Earning the Arrow of Light will help earn many of the requirements for the lower ranks of the Boy Scouts. The Arrow of Light award is the only Cub Scout award that can be worn on a Boy Scout uniform.

2. Discuss with your den leader or adult partner, the benefits and contributions photography makes to modern life. Report what you learned to your den or family.

You take a picture of something important that someone else might want to look at. It might be important for the world to look at.

3. Using a camera, take at least 10 pictures of your family, pet, or scenery; show these to your den.

For the Pin I can choose 5 of the other requirements.

2. Look at a book of published photos about a subject that interests you. Find out what makes these photos remarkable and why people want to look at these pictures. Learn whether the photographer used light or angles to make the photos interesting. Discuss what you learned with an adult.

The National Geographic Book of Mammals is cool. The pictures are great. The animals are cool. There are some really close pictures. It looks like the people taking the pictures were in danger but mom says they used zoom. I like the underwater pictures.

3. Explain to an adult what “red eye” is and why it can happen in a picture. Show examples.

Red eye is when the flash shines off of the blood vessels in your eye.

4. Make a short video of a friend, family member, or pet, and show it to your den or family.

Webelos Outdoor Adventure

We went to the Mountains to the Sea trail. It was snowing and the ground was covered in ice, water, and mud.

On the trail we stopped and learned how to make an emergency shelter. We got a really large stick and leaned it against a tree. We put sticks leaned against the tree that was leaned against the big tree. We put dead leaves over the sticks that were leaned against the branch that was leaned against the tree. You are supposed to put a tarp over top of that and you have a waterproof shelter for the night. But we had to get back to the trail head. So we didn't put the tarp on.

My mom and I looked at a National Geographic book. I showed her the picture of the rhinoceros. It was cool because was the focus was great and we could see detail. The subject was not right in the center. The background was blurry so you only notice what is important.

Scouting For Food

Pack 401 organized a food drive as part of the 100 Years of Scouting requirements. This was new territory for most of us as we had never participated in Scouting for Food before. We had no idea what to expect as far as support goes.

The boys made the posters and passed out fliers a few weeks before the parade. We also spent the day handing out fliers.

We had 2 different campaigns.

The Pack Campaign: Goal of 100 cans REACHED!
Each scout delivered paper bags to their neighbors and then collected them when they were ready.

The Community Campaign: Goal of 1000 Cans!

When our pack marched in the Christmas Parade we pulled wagons to collect donations. This went very well and we recieved a couple hundred cans that day.

We also have signs and a box at City Hall. Our last collection day is December 11th.

I'd definitely say all their hard work paid off. There is a valuable lesson to be learned in getting involved with your own community.

Christmas Parade

We were a little less organized than usual. We had several last minute changes to make due to the rain. We pulled it off though and had a great time!

Some of our scouts marched behind Mayor Moss and threw toys from the trunk of his vehicle.

The rest of the pack followed further down the line.

We combined our food drive with the parade. People brought cans and put them in our wagons.

Popcorn sales are over. I think I'll do our own sales a bit differently next year. We did much better than we expected.

The boys sold enough for a level 4 prize. They decided to let Jeremiah claim it. He tagged along after them for so much while they earned their Webelos Activity Badges. It was a very generous offer. I'm proud of them.

Fall Family Festival

We parked and then rode out to Isley Farm on a hay ride.

But then we got stuck in the mud.

'S'all Good. The dads saved the day and we were off again!

Fall Family Festival

I usually take the "Pie Eating Contest". However, these pies are no pies at all. I hide a gummy worm under a mountain of whipped cream. The first to eat all the whipped cream, including chewing up the worm, wins!

This is my favorite game.

There were a lot of other games too. We had a Cupcake Walk.

You can't see the ball suspended by a rope, but the purpose of this game is to swing the pendulum and knock down the cans stacked on the bench.

Fall Camp-Out

Our pack organized it's own camp-out for this season.

Friday night campfire.

Saturday morning breakfast. I prefer helping out with breakfast. I like getting up before most of the other campers. I like the smell of breakfast cooking outdoors. I like being first for coffee. :D

Flag Raising:

The Tigers/Wolves/Webelos earned their badminton and volleyball beltloops while the Bears went fishing. They will trade places later in the afternoon.

The Webelos had to prepare a flag for retirement. It's very serious and the boys learn a lot about patriotism.

Then the dens had time to meet and work on special projects.
The Webelos worked on their Scientist badge.

The Bears made bird feeders.

The Wolves learned a bit about first-aid.

Then the pack came together and worked on the astronomy beltloop and listened to the park ranger.

The park ranger was kind enough to show us what he wore on his belt. As well as educate us about the area.

Then it was the Wolves/Tigers/Webelos' turn to go fishing.

He just can't help himself. Mud+Water+Jeremiah=Mess

Oh the best part of the night! The part of the whole event that's worth waiting for. Camfire!!! We had several skits and some songs. We retired a flag. We had a GREAT time!

The guys help the kids with cocoa and s'mores. It's a delicious job. Somebody has to do it.

After little to no sleep we all gather around what is left of the campfire for morning services.

So sad. The weekend is over. It's time to pack it all in, go home, and do laundry.

Our pack lead the Pledge of Allegiance at the 4th of July celebration in Butner. It was for Creedmoor and Butner people. Only it wasn't on the 4th. It was on the 3rd.

We met with Mayor Moss before presenting the flag.

A scout is supposed to salute during the pledge.

I really liked the sparklers. A friend brought some and shared.

Webelos Camp-Out Part 2

Our hike was supposed to be 3-miles but it turned into 5. It was fun though.

When we got back to camp, Quamron's mom had some games for us to play to earn our Leave No Trace badges.

We started in teams and had to pack a back pack to be prepared.

We raced to each station and earned a card. Each station had a different game. We could not leave any person behind and had to stay with our team.

The games were fun. We also played games with buckets of water.

Then it was time for dinner. We cooked our own hot dogs on the fire.

We retired an old United States Flag. That part was very cool. We had to be respectful though and didn't take pictures.

Webelos Camp-Out Part 1

The Webelos had to do the planning and pitch in with the work on this trip.

Our family (along with the McDonoughs) was assigned breakfast the first morning. We got up at 6am to get started.

Calvin made the bacon.

Joshua made the eggs.

Once breakfast was ready we had our flag raising ceremony.

Then we took off our class A uniforms and were comfortable in our class b's.

We had to lead everyone on a 3-mile hike. It was fun finding the trail.

There were so many neat things to see. BUt it was very hot and humid. We were all sticky and wet.

We found all sorts of cool things on our trail.

Here is a yellow belly slider.

Here are some very cool orange mushrooms. They were much brighter not on camera.

Here toad is called an American Toad.

This is called a Rough Green Snake.

The water looked nice and cool.

We took a brake from our hike at the visitor center. They had a cool museum inside and there was air conditioning. We worked on our knots (taught line) in the hallway

Cub Scouts is fun. Right now I am working on the Athlete and Handyman badges.

For Athlete we built an obstacle course and raced on it. I also have to exercise for 30 days and keep a log of my progress.

I also do curl-ups (they are like sit-ups), verticle jumps, and time my 50 yard dash and 1/4 mile runs everyday.

For Handyman we learn about tools and how to use them. We did bike repair a few weeks ago. I can change light bulbs the right way by looking at the wattage and volts. My dad is going to teach me to check the oil and tire pressure on the car.

Cub Scouts is hard work but it is cool.

Cub Scout is fun. We play games at the camporee. I am on the arrow point trail in bears. My Bear Den Leader is Miss Rhonda. She is nice and helps us boys. Mr. Jeff helps her and brings us snacks.

I can't wait to be a Weebelos. I plan to earn more beltloops this summer and maybe some pins.

We bought a new tent to take camping take camping because our old one leaks. Mom says the boys will get the leaky tent and the girls will get the new tent. That stinks.

Tonight we have a den meeting. I will only meet with other bears like me. At the last meeting we learned how to tie knots. I don't know what we will do tonight. I can not wait.

I love Cub Scouts. I like the parades and fireman departments.

I am a Tiger. I built a birdhouse with my friends. We also made puppets. I am having fun playing with my friends.

We are going to the camporee in April. We will eat snacks and sleep in a tent. I can't wait to roast marshmallows.

At pack meetings we get snacks. We do our skits and show all our stuff that we made. We also earn badges.

Cub Scouts are cooler than Awanas.

I earned my Bobcat Award. It was easy cheesy.
